Building Your Team

Most new businesses fail. So, what makes the few that thrive so successful?

There are many factors, including the marketplace, access to capital, and the ability to innovate. But the most critical component is hiring the right people and forming a team that works well together.

Why Your Company Should Focus on Team Building

Successful teams can help a company grow, scale, and prosper. This is true for start-ups and existing businesses, both large and small. Teams can achieve things beyond what just one person can do.

Great teams start when company leaders hire the right people. These individuals value working toward a common goal, respect their managers and focus on achieving the company’s objectives. In addition, the team should have complementary skills, similar to sports teams that use all the players’ talents combined to win games.

When hiring employees for your team, you should consider the company’s structure, culture, and goals. Doing so can help with choosing the best candidates for each position. It would be best to keep your company’s competition in mind.

Steps to Building a Strong Workplace Team

There are several steps to building a strong workplace team. These include the following:

  • Establishing expectations from the beginning.
  • Respecting team members as individuals.
  • Ensuring that all team members respect each other.
  • Practicing emotional intelligence.
  • Motivating with positivity.
  • Communicating often.
  • Looking for ways to reward employees for their accomplishments.
  • Welcoming diversity.
  • Finding individuals that you trust.

Establishing Expectations from the Beginning

New team members need to know what you expect from them. Often, when managers initially hire someone at a company, they are like a blank slate. So, it is essential to let them know what you expect regarding productivity and the type of environment you’re hoping to establish. If you communicate this from the beginning, new team members will know what they’ve signed up for.

Respecting Team Members as Individuals

It would help if you also respect your employees as individuals. While they are a team at work, they are real people with lives outside of the workplace. Your team members can blossom when you respect them for their unique skills and the ability to use them to achieve various goals.

Ensuring that All Team Members Respect Each Other

While managers and company leaders should respect team members, these individuals should also respect each other. Therefore, encourage them to view one another as valued business partners working toward common objectives.

Practicing Emotional Intelligence

Great managers value emotional intelligence. This is the ability to control, perceive, and evaluate emotions. When attaining and maintaining a workplace team, it is also essential to understand, interpret, and respond to the feelings of others.

For example, because all employees are not motivated by the same things, you should embrace their different work styles and forms of inspiration. Doing so means treating peoples’ differences as assets, not obstacles.

Motivating with Positivity

Great leaders should abide by the theory that “you get more flies with honey than vinegar.” Shaping team members’ behavior with positive reinforcement is more effective than criticism.

You can create a positive work environment by citing behaviors and events that you like and encouraging your employees to continue doing more of the same. Positive reinforcement can be more productive for motivating term performance than shaming those who made mistakes.

Communicating Often

People want to know where they stand in business and personal relationships. Therefore, managers should make it a point to tell them often. That way, employees will know what is working and what they need to improve upon.

If workers sense that you are not happy with their performance, or they think they are doing a good job, but you are actually not satisfied, it can lead to shock and disappointment for the employee.

Clear and effective communication can keep working relationships strong for the long term, while silence can break things apart quickly. So it is essential to ensure that you are constantly communicating with your team.

Looking for Ways to Reward Employees for Their Accomplishments

When employees do a good job, they appreciate rewards. So, whenever possible, reward workers for their accomplishments. These rewards can take many different forms, such as:

  • Cash bonuses
  • Paid time off
  • Gift cards
  • Complimentary meals

Depending on the employee’s accomplishment, and your company’s budget, you could reward employees with trips or other higher-ticket items.

Welcoming Diversity

When building your business, you should focus on building a diverse team of employees. Adding individuals with different experiences, backgrounds, opinions, and ages can cover many other areas. With that in mind, surround yourself with people who will inform your judgment calls and the content you send out.

Finding Individuals that You Trust

Trust is crucial when running a successful business. So, you must hire trustworthy individuals who will keep the company’s best interests at heart. Someone who can make good decisions on your behalf can be a good ambassador for you and your business.

After certain employees have been with the company for a particular time, you could groom them to be collaborators and empower them to make leadership decisions. Because you are investing time and resources into one or more key individuals, it is vital to consider their long-term potential at your organization.

Have You Built a Winning Team at Your Company?

When building a winning team at your company, you will turn individuals into a cohesive group of people you have organized to work together to meet your business’s objectives. If you have not yet created a successful team, working with a specialist in this area can be beneficial and can help you narrow down the suitable candidates for the jobs.
